To rent or to buy a server environment for your web development is not cheap. Moreover, not everybody knows how to configure a system. If you’re looking for a web platform like WordPress (or even other platforms too), and you do not want to spend a dime, but to run your web on your Windows computer before you decide to make it live, yes you can!

For testing and learning purposes, you may run WordPress installation locally on Windows computer without the need of having live server hosting and domain name.

In this simple tutorial, we present you on how to install and run WordPress on your Windows computer using XAMPP.

XAMPP, is a single easy installer which let you not worry about having to install each Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl. They are the combination of Web Server (Apache), Database (MySQL), Programming and Scripting Language (PHP and Perl). All these components are compiled in a single executable installer to ease installation process.


Install XAMPP on Windows Computer

1. To start, just simply download the XAMPP installer from Apache Friends.

2. Once downloaded, install it.

By default the installation folder will be in C:\xampp.

3. Lets everything proceed by clicking next.

4. You shall have a windows popup of Control Panel to start or stop the services such as Apache and MySQL.

Make sure at least two main service such as Apache and MySQL have been started.

5. To make sure your XAMPP installation are working, open any of your favorite browser and go to http://localhost/.

You shall be able to see the same as below screenshot.

There you are, now you have a running Apache web server! Yeay!

We’re not finished yet. How about WordPress?

Install WordPress Bitnami Stack

1. At the http://locahost/ you shall be able to see WordPress logo icon below it. Click it!

2. Once downloaded, install it.

By default the installation will ask for XAMPP installation folder.

3. It will ask for MySQL login password if you have changed it during XAMPP installation, otherwise it will not.

4. For the WordPress application login, it will ask you to specify the user login and password.

5. You can check the wordpress installation folder by going to C:\xampp\htdocs folder. At the screenshot below, themebits is my WordPress installation folder.

6. Usually you can view the WordPress web application homepage at http://localhost/wordpress. The installation folder name might have been different.
